STS does the Travel Day of Action!

Lynne Griffiths

The 23rd June 2021 saw the travel industry unite in the face of unparalleled damage due to the Covid pandemic. Events took place around the country and on social media to highlight the devastation that the industry has suffered and continues to suffer – and without Government recognition or support.

The key aims of the day were to: allow the travel industry to urge the UK Government and devolved administrations to speak up for international travel; allow international travel to return safely and in a risk-based approach by properly implementing the Global Travel Taskforce’s plan for a traffic-light system, expanding the Green list in line with the evidence and making restrictions more proportionate, whilst keeping a strong red list to guard against variants; and to bring forward a package of tailored financial support, including extension of furlough support, recognising the travel sector’s ability to trade and generate income.

Lynne and I were delighted to be part of the lobbying event and it was truly heartwarming to be able to meet and talk with so many old and new industry friends. Although the reasons for coming together on the day are truly tragic, the ability of our industry to come together and support each other was motivating and inspiring.

We even managed to ‘nobble’ travel commentator Simon Calder (photo) and he was kind enough to take the time for a photo and quick chat.

The Travel Day of Action was a great day – but it must be only the start of pushing our industry to the forefront of the Government’s attention. We have to maintain the momentum achieved yesterday to push on with our messaging and get our industry back on its feet.
